Russian Locomotive Fleet: Wear Status

Average wear of the shunting locomotives owned by industrial enterprises is 90%; average age of the fleet is 29 years, the RZD-Partner reports. Over 60% of the fleet (8,700 locomotives) is beyond their service life. However, industrial enterprises are not willing or cannot improve their fleets.

RZD’s locomotive fleet wear is 68-69%. The company, however, would likes to acquire around 450 locomotives p.a. in 2017 - 2020, which is 10% below the demand.

RZD-Partner believes that it will take 30-40 years to modernize RZD locomotive fleet. Improving the fleet of the industrial enterprises might take as long.
