UniWagon to Supply / Build 6,000 Freight Cars for Iran

UniWagon is to supply 1,100 freight cars and car components to Iran, the Kommersant refers to Mehr News Agency, which, in its turn, quotes Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh, Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade. Furthermore, UniWagon is to build 4,900 cars for Iranian Railways in cooperation with three unnamed Iranian companies.
The 4,900 cars will be assembled within three years. The partners agreed on phased localization: in year 1 Iran will manufacture car bodies, by year 3 UniWagon will export only wheel sets and brake shoes. The project worth of several million dollars is to be financed by Roseximbank.
UniWagon’s contract followed Uralvagonzavod’s - the latter has already shipped 600 cars to Iran and expects to ship additional 1,000+ in 2017. Other Russian rail manufacturers are also working closely with Iran; e.g. RM Rail’s Deputy General Director Andrey Vodopyanov confirmed that his company supplies rail kits to Iran for two years and expects to “extend this cooperation”.
